The Last Straw

Updated: Oct 7, 2018

In the midst of a worldwide initiative to abandon single use plastic bags, Australian leading supermarket Woolworths last month has finally taken this huge step. Although the same cannot be said for competitor Coles. Despite an initial intention to also ban their single use plastic bags, Coles has done just this but instead replaced their bags indefinitely with “reusable” plastic bags. Coles suggested this was necessary due to the number of complaints from customers, however Woolworths has continued to promote this ban indicating the opposite.

Additionally Coles has introduced a Little Shop Mini Collection made up of, you have guessed it, plastic material. Despite this being a fun activity for children to take part in, what kind of message does this promote while the rest of the world are trying their best efforts to address and improve the dark outlook on environmental degradation? Our planet faces the prospect of having more plastic than fish in oceans by 2050 and yet this issue is still not taken seriously (Source). Not long ago, a man from Queensland claims he found one washed up on the beach triggering outrage from people all over Australia who have expressed their frustration at Coles. In response, Coles have defended themselves claiming that the little shop is entirely recyclable and have promoted in store facilities that recycle appropriately. However this does not take away from the fact that they have introduced an Australian wide, mass collected, useless and non-biodegradable product.
